Music Memories

Music to me is engrained in my memory. I can hear a song and remember exactly what I was doing the first time I ever heard it. The entire moment gets colored with the song and just hearing it again brings me right back. My top three songs correspond with my top 3 favorite moments.

Come On Eileen is my number one favorite song. Ever. The moment the opening notes begin to play I am immediately shot back to driving around with my dad. We would be screaming it at the top of our lungs as we sped down the highway towards a bookstore or a movie theater. The entire songs feels like joy and happiness and uncontainable excitement. It starts to play and I immediately feel the warmth of the summer sun on my face, the wind whipping in my face, the hoarseness in my throat as I sing at the top of my lungs. I can hear my dad's laughter, see him tap the steering wheel. I am instantaneously at peace.

Mr. Brightside by the Killers is the shit. It is the ultimate party song and brings me back to hanging out with my best friends and screaming in a dark basement. It's jumping up and down until you can't breathe anymore. It's screaming at the top of your lungs until your throat is so raw you can barely whisper the words. It's laughing and dancing and letting go. There's a reason it's been on the Billboard 100 since it came out over a decade ago. It hits home to every single person that hears it and I'm no different.

Everyone (or at least every mentally ill bitch) has a song that makes them feel like the main character in a coming of age movie. I am no different. My main character song is Green Light by Lorde. It makes me feel like I'm running through New York after a break up going absolutely wild. It makes me feel like there's an entire series dedicated to me and my adventures in fully techno chrome with neon lights and clubs.

  2. I very much agree about Green Light by Lorde. I have a Spotify playlist called "main character" and I put a bunch of songs that would be in a movie where I am the main character. Of course Green Light was included.

  3. Love "Come On Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners! It's such a interesting song with the intro and the outro. The violin makes someone think it's a country song at first, then it's turns to an ultimate 80's tune! Great song, just a fun song about loving a girl named Eileen.
